Re: [RC] When to call animal control? - heidihttp://www.donblazer.com/ This clinicians web site has a page that say's "Stop Coggins Slaughter". Basically he is saying, EIA is not fatal. I don't know him or if he knows what he is talking about. Any vets out there have an opinion on his position? From what I gather from older veterinarians, EIA USED to be far more common than it is today. I've talked to several older vets who have seen horses die from EIA, including the vet who was my boss when I first got out of school. (And he was in Oregon--not even a high-risk area like the SE.) It is a horrible death. I would suspect that one reason that we so rarely see symptomatic horses now is that the eradication program IS working, at least to some extent. My opinion on this guy's position is that he hasn't a clue as to the history of the disease. I'd far rather see the few positives killed than see the disease increase again and be the threat that it was 50 years ago.
