RE: [RC] GOVERNMENT HORSE ID-From another list - Nell LindquistI work at a policy research institute for a university that has a large agricultural component and we've done some work on this issue. Since 9/11 there has been a huge increase in interest on the part of the ag industry and the gov't about how to plan for and handle potential incidents of "agroterrorism" and ensure the security of the food supply, that is, the possibility that livestock in the US could be purposely infected with devastating diseases such as anthrax, BSE, Hoof & Mouth, etc. There are currently a number of offices, agencies, private individuals, vets, stockyards, processing facilities, ranchers, etc. etc. who have to be communicated with and whose actions would need to be coordinated should such an event occur. So the plan to tag all livestock is a result of this, just one mechanism proposed to deal with the situation. I believe the idea is that if each individual animal were marked with some singular ID, an outbreak could be more easily pinpointed and contained. It is not some plot by PETA or Big Brother. It's just another reaction to the events of 9/11. And keep in mind that it is just one plan out of many at this point and that it takes these things ages to actually come to the point where they might possibly be implemented. ---NELL __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
