RE: [RC] Adequan shots? - Steph TeeterLaurie - this is a rambling answer from a rider, not a veterinarian, please just take this as one person's opinion, nothing official. This is my understanding: the AERC rules prohibit the equine being influenced (by 'drugs') 'during competition' which is technically between vetting in and completion. But, the rider must also be aware of the withdrawal times of certain drugs (e.g. phenylbutazone) because their effectiveness can range from hours to days, and they can remain in the blood stream for varying periods of time and may even give positive tests for hours/days/weeks after their effectivenes wears off. Most of the withdrawal times for common drugs are published. Most drug labs actually test for only a few substances. But there is definitely a gray zone - drugs/nutriceuticals which are not testible such as injectable glycosoaminoglycans (Adequan), glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate (Cosequin), MSM, which are supposed to help improve or maintain the joint cartilage, and may also have anti-inflammatory properties (injectable Adequan). But regarding any anti-inflammatory action (pain relief) there are no published 'withdrawal' times that I am aware of. So riders are really guessing - some riders give it 2 days before a ride, some 1, some a week, etc. Most agree that it will help maintain healthier joints, but I'm not sure I've ever seen anybody state a 'withdrawal time' for Adequan - at what point is the anti-imflammatory effect gone? I don't know how common this is, but I've given Adequan to my horses within 48 hours, and have also done it within 24 hours (forgot). I personally don't think Adequan can make a lame horse sound, or keep a marginal horse from becoming lame during a ride. I give it to a few of my horses once a month(actually just one horse currently) because he is getting older, and I want to keep his joints as healthy as possible while still riding him. In my mind Adequan, Legend, glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, etc, are joint nutrients, hopefully prolonging the usefullness and comfort of my horses by minimizing the damage to their joints because of the job they're doing. I'm not sure if I've answered your question... but this is how I see it. Is this common,? Why? Is this ok by AERC rules? And I noticed lots of people give Glocosomine or Condrotins orally. DO they stop these before a ride or are these ok? And is this just hopefully a preventitive?
