All I can tell you is that in over 7500 miles of endurance competition, I've never had mile markers...occasionally I've had a sign that says 2 miles to vet check 3 or something like that. Tevis has some really good markings, but that's in recent years. It just isn't common at all in the mountain, west, southwest or pacific west areas. We just use so much open BLM and forest service. I imagine most of what you'll see marked will be in the eastern US, where public land is scarce and rides are often run on designated equestrian trails.
