[RC] re: Aussie rules - Cindy CollinsI am sorry, but I get almost physically ill reading some of these ideas. I've started two horses on one-day 100 milers and think it was a fantastic start for them. Also, among the people I know personally that did their very first ride as a one-day 100 miler, I see very few of the abuses we are discussing. It's easy to go do a 25 miler with NO preparation and make lots of stupid mistakes. The idea of a one day 100 miler makes one ponder their training program a little more seriously. I do know that I am showing my age, but this whole discussion is starting to wear thin. Just as an interesting aside, the 2001 XP rides had 267 horses ridden 67,550 AERC miles with only one vet check per day at the half way point. Riders were expected to be responsible for the welfare of their horse. Has any one thought about that? There were lots of minor lameness problems, especially early on when the horses were on so much hard gravel road, but were there any horse deaths? I actually don't know the answer to that, but I can guess. Rules will not fix lack of common sense or someone who puts winning ahead of their horse. Yes, it can happen to any of us, on any day because **** does happen. However, no rule will fix the real problem of a rider who knows their horse isn't right, and makes the choice to keep going for a win. You just can't legislate this and I am so afraid that you are destroying what so many of us love about the sport in your well-meaning efforts.
