Re: [RC] modifying heart rate monitor - Kristene SmutsHas anyone modified a human heart rate monitor to work for your horse? If so, what type of modification is needed? thanks. Heather>> Yes, I purchased one a year or so ago. All you need to do is buy a piece of broad elastic, about 2cm wide, and sew the clips that go into the belt onto the new elastic. Fit the elastic around your horse so that it fits snug, but it shouldn't pinch or be too tight. When you put it on, place it over the wither and allow it to slip back towards the saddle on its own, otherwise it might chafe under the saddle. Place the one electrode (the ridged oval) over his main artery on the left and the other electrode up towards the wither (some people place the belt behind both front legs, from right to left, but I haven't tried that yet). Don't use any type of glycerine to the contacts, just wet the horse and after a while the sweat will be enough for the contact. You can also try mixing salt with a water based body lotion for the electrodes. I place my watch on the saddle so it is always close to the belt - at water stops I might be further than a meter away from the horse then I lose signal. Not much modification needed!
