[RC] Penicillin Shots for Horses - rides2farMy friend's horse has a cut on his heel bulb on the front. He has some infection in it. He is being provided PenG shots for this. My friend gave this horse a shot today and he went wacky about the stall out of his mind for about 5 mins I'm no vet, but am a person who's done lots of dumb stuff. She may have shot some air up under the skin. I did that once giving a puppy a shot and he yelped and rolled for several minutes...brought back memories of once when I was 15 and had the bright idea of forcing my thumb to attempt to block the tip of an airhose. I managed to shoot air up under my skin and it burned like the devil. As far as penicillin shots go,..I started insisting they give me pills. I put them in a coffee grinder, mix them with applesauce and shoot them in with a syringe. I'm curious...is she soaking it in epsom salts or anything like that? How's about putting some ichthammol & a bandage to draw out infection? If it were my foot I'd be doing something at the scene of the problem. I hate to give injections unnecessarily. Some nasty stuff can happen from injections gone wrong. I'll give them if needed though.
