[RC] No Improvements? - Dot Wiggins

Sorry, I can't quite agree there have been no improvements in horse
"welfare" in the last 20 years.

We have gone from 72 pulse recovery anytime within a timed hold to gates
with 60/64 before hold time starts, and 30 minute limit for recovery.
From anything goes once the finish line is crossed, to pulse recovery and
sound at a walk, then to "fit to continue".
I used to hate it when my horse finished head up, bright, looking for more,
and the "winners" were in trouble metabolically or lame, or both. Something
wrong with that picture.
My observations are that the vets are a lot more skilled at picking up small
problems, and less likely to let a horse slide by if things aren't quite
right.. Riders are smarter about feeds and supplements, especially
electrolytes.

Of course things aren't perfect, perfect doesn't exist on this earth.
Doesn't mean we won't go on trying to get better at what we do.
Besides, if everything was perfect today, what would you do tomorrow?

Slamming each other doesn't get anything done.
