Re: [RC] Sports Medicine Boots - Vicki AustinHi, I LOVE my sports medicine boots. I only use them for endurance rides and on the cross country course when eventing (while jumping) as support and cushining. Have never had a problem with them getting sand in them as long as you put them tight enough (like you are suppose to) and pull them off and clean them at each hold. I don't use them to train in, I use just galloping / splint boots that don't restrict the tendons at all (just protect him against himself when he decides to perform "airs above the ground" and steps on himself and therefore do not weaken anything. Using them only on competitions doesn't have enough time to weaken the tendons and only helps to support them especially since my horse get a little excited on a ride and jumps around more than when on training rides. I figure anything we can do to help the horse keep on going down the trail in comfort is good. Hope this helps. I remember that at one time lots of people swore by them. Well, not too long ago I encountered a trail rider who was very outspoken about his opinion regarding the importance of a sport horse needing to wear such boot, so I decided to read more about them as I myself am not using them for my horses. That's when I started to read about horses actually weakening in those tendon areas after continuous useage of these boots. One article I found (I think it was in the Endurance World magazine) that talked about those boots actually hindering the natural movement of the horse, yet risking more lameness injuries and further making this boot something rather negative. Then taking heat build-up and possible sand beneath those boots, .....what's your take on it? Just curious. Then I started to think....hmmm...perhaps this boot would be great in the aid of rehabilitating a horse with tendon problems. Then I found in "The Bowed Tendon Book" that they would never recommend the use of such boot because it would "hide" any warning signs. So go figure...
