Re: [RC] Good Hay - Sisu West Ranch"I'm getting pretty wimpy as middle age marches onward, but I still prefer the 70-80 lb bales--they are packed so much tighter and the hay seems to keep better" I have seen some poorly packed MW bales, but most are properly packed. I believe that tightness of pack and length are adjustable on the bailer, but have never run one so I am not sure. Larger bales have less surface area and should keep better also. I agree that western hay is more palatable and in general better hay. In the MW it takes 4 days to dry as opposed to the 2 here. There is much more time for sun bleaching, more rained on hay and a lot more mold in the hay. Even good hay in the MW has some mold in it, if you are trying to dry hay at 90% humidity, heavy dew, and some rain you can't help it. We feel lucky to be able to feed the horses good Bitterroot grass this year!
