Re: [RC] Fwd: Re: [RC] [Guest] trailers - Milinda Ellis

A friend of mine has a Brenderup and this summer, we
hauled her purebred Cleveland Bay (a BIG mama!) on a
round trip from Fort Worth to Lexington, Kentucky.
The trailer pulled well, had lots of room for the
mare, and is light weight. The problem? It's TOO
LIGHT for long trips. That poor mare bounced around a
great deal and was very fatigued and sore as a result.
You know what they say about "too much of a good
thing"...

This trailer is great for short trips, but not for
long hauls OR when it's windy!!! It's like trying to
pull a billboard in high winds -- you'll be all over
the road, loaded or not!

Unless you must have a gooseneck, you might consider
a Brenderup.
They are straight-load trailers, but they have a
chest bar that
allows the horse to stretch their neck and "surf"
with their front
feet for balance. They also have enough room for the
horse to lower
its head and clear nasal passages, which is critical
for stress
reduction and preventing shipping fever.
The windows are protected, so the horses face isn't
into the street
fumes and wind, and they don't need a fly mask. The
divider between
horses is clear, so they can see each other =
calming
They all come with torsion suspension, which is
smoother and
quieter = less stress
The Baron model will carry two 18 h horses in
comfort, yet can be
pulled by a 6 cylinder (I have one that I pull with
my 6 cyl. GMC
Jimmy SUV).
They have galvanized-steel frames and bulletproof
sides = low
maintenance and never need painting.
I could go on and on :-)
In short, they do everything the adv. says they
will.

We are shopping for a trailer but have heard some
bad things about
slant loads causing right front lameness, and that
the angle the
horse is at plays some role (less than 45 degrees
being bad). What
is the best direction for the horse to face for
long hauls? This
would be a 2 horse gooseneck probably about 15 feet
box length.
Also, is it better for the horse to have a stock
type w/slat sides
or the "fancy" stuff with the windows?
