Re: [RC] kicking filly - Karen SullivanAs a die-hard horse-whacker in some situations, this is obviously not one of them. We had a wild donkey some years ago. You could not touch her feet at all without her kicking. The way we trained her, along with the weanling I bought was pure food reward. Start working your hands gently down the legs. Stop BEFORE the animals gets nervous, reward with baby carrot or something the animal desires. They soon figure it out that being touched on the legs, and eventually feet is a pleasant thing. As far as actually lifting feet, my theory is to make it slightly uncomfortable in a way that is CLEAR to move or pick up the foot. This is why I don't like the "pinching leg tendon method", or pulling, etc. With a horse that is lazy to pick up their foot, or to give the youngster the cue, I would place the tip of the hoof pick (already in my hand), on the back of the pastern, not a jab, but very light pressure. The reaction is to move the foot forward or pick it up. Immediately reward animal. Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: "A. She has had very little done with her, and she does not like having her back feet handled. She has some sort of skin-scunge on 3 of her 4 feet at the top and front of her coronet band (scratches?) which is tender, and she kicks back when I apply medicated gel to the area. I don't think she's doing it out of meaness (she does not aim at me, just kicks back), I think she just doesn't know any better. In general she is very friendly, comes when she's called, and is very calm. Not to revive the 'whack-em' debate, but I'd be interested to hear suggestions on how to deal with the kicking.
