As you yourself note, your dog already knew what the command meant, he was choosing to not obey immediately. Dogs (and horses) should comply immediately and on the first command, but to do that, they need to know and thoroughly understand the command. If I understand you correctly, your dog was very compliant until he was out of reach (he's no dummy). So then you needed a way to reach out and touch him. >ggg< A shock collar is an advanced training tool, just as long-shanked curb bits are. It's use should be part of a comprehensive training program as others here have noted, and not just slapped on and zap the dog. For one thing, that's not humane and for another, it's a good way to make a dog collar-wise.
