Re: [RC] New Horse Goals - rides2far

Second, as for first-year goals--I think they SHOULD be quite attainable,

What I meant was, you don't say, "O.K. you can have 3 finishes and we won't let
2 pulls be held against you...don't want anyone disappointed."

I've watched my kids leave trophies in the car that they got for
"participation" in a softball tournament where they lost twice straight and
were eliminated. Who wants an award for that? Then I saw our school not give
trophies to our football team when they'd had the best season in the school's
history...couldn't afford them...though these are the same kids that have
dozens of trophies for nothing.

I'm getting close to being ready to start a new horse. In our part of the
country you could do 3 rides in the Spring, one per month, take the summer off,
and do a couple in the fall. I think that would be a pretty big
accomplishment...but then again I didn't mention one year. I said *eventually*.
If someone wanted to take 2 years to get 5 completions that was within my
proposal.

I'm seeing horses doing sub-5 hr. 50's right out of the box. I've done it
myself so can't point fingers, but I'm not going to do it again. I've talked to
quite a few riders with lots of miles and seems like they all get a more long
term perspective. They've won, and they've started over, and they've been
pulled. Then they decide what they really want is a horse that will let them go
to lots of rides and not go lame. Heck, this may be more of a goal for people
who've mellowed with miles. I'd just like to put some real goals out there that
benefit the horse when met.
