[RC] re: new horses - Cindy CollinsThere is no right answer to this, of course, because each horse is an individual with unique talents and abilities. However, I, too, like to set goals each year so I understand. I can share what I did with the last mare I started and my hopes for my young horse. I don't do LDs, but that's my personal choice. I started my mare with 2-50 milers her first year of competition. They were totally in the back of the pack at a 8-9 hour pace. Her second year we did 450 miles of 50s, still at a 7-8 hour pace. Her third year we did another 450 miles including three 100 milers. Our 50 miler pace picked up to the 5-6 hour range. The only rides we didn't finish during these years were because of my health or being over-time. Right now I have a four year old gelding who will do his first 50 milers next year. First, I had Kathy Arnold (Hall of Fame, 19,000 miles, winner of ROC and Tevis, etc.) start him under saddle for me, and it doesn't get any better than that! This winter I'd taking dressage lessons on him a couple of times a month. My goal is to get 2-3 slow 50 milers on him next season. Hope this helps.
