Re: [RC] BLM adoptions at rides - Dyane Smith

Years ago, I went to a lecture by a vet/scientist who talked about the
politics of population control of mustangs. At the time, he said they had a
spermacide that could be injected into stallions from a helicopter. It
would work for 6-12 months (I forget how long, but relatively long).

The advantages:
- it did not disrupt the herd
- it was safe for the stallion
- it was relatively inexpensive
- while birth control was not absolute, the number of foals conceived was
radically reduced

The disadvantages (according to him):
- people liked the idea of chasing herds of wild horses and this method did
not require that
- there was a competing interest in catching and spaying the mares or
finding some birth control for the mares.

My own theory, too, is that like Maggie in Ohio, I think it is very
difficult to get large, governmental organizations to collaborate on much.
Not the least, because taxpayers (read special interest groups) climb in and
muddy the waters. The BLM has a horrible boondoggle on its hands, but it
would not surprise me to find out that there is a lot of local political
pressure to keep the roundups and adoptions going because, and it's only
natural, some enterprises depend on them. The other thing is that the
federal government is big and doesn't change (adapt) easily.

Dyane (second generation government and proud of it)

Unfortunately, the people who do the "outcrying" are usually not people
who
know anything about horses or are otherwise unable to adopt one. Maybe
there should be a requirement, that if a person is going to protest
population control of mustangs, that person must be required to adopt one,
train it, and keep it. :-)

As to Heidi's commenst about 'pie-in-the-sky', BLM would
actually LOVE to shoot feral horses, but the public outcry
forces them into the adoption program. What they should do is
contract with existing non-profit adoption groups to train and
adopt out mustangs, and coduct follow-up checks.
