Valley: Let em' race! So soon every one forgets the incident in Montana where a bystander was seriously injured while riders raced to the finish. The riders were severely castigated for their actions by the AERC. It is not the fault of the riders. The race to the finish is well established by past experience, it is the responsibility of management to provide a safe venue. It's also the responsibility of the rider to pull back if everything isn't clear. Management can't forsee everything. Management needs to do their part, but this one is a shared responsibility. Personally, I think its crazy to risk yourself, your horse, and bystanders by racing in for a regular ride (things like PanAm, national championship, etc. I do understand). What's one ride? No one is going to remember in a month who came in 3rd as opposed to 4th at some ride or another, but they'll sure talk about the crash that got someone (or a horse) hurt for a long time. I like the approach of one of my favorite ride managers - she sets up the trail so that it is single track for the last 1/4 mile or so - you better sort it out before you hit that. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
