keeping with the 'to finish is to win', why don't they give awards for the
first 5 or 10 or whatever B.C."s and just acknowledge whoever finished
first? A..."

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I beleive that the reason for a finish
line goes back before the AERC.  The story I heard is that in one of the
early Tevis rides, there was not official finish line and two horses came
racing down the street and the winner could have been either depending on
where the race ended.


My point is there have always been races to the finish.
