On the other hand, I suspect when the data comes out it will turn out that excpet for a very few exceptions there won't be blatant repeat offenders, that deaths and serious treatments hit more or less at "random." It's not new riders that are the cause, it's not front runners that are the cause, etc. It happens across the board to riders in the front, back and middle with 100 miles or 10,000 miles. Yes, indeed. That illustrates part of the reason we will never, ever completely eliminate equine fatalities from any distance riding sport. The best we can hope to do is minimize them -- and at that, IMO the AERC has been highly successful. It's also sobering to remember that it can happen to any of us, it could happen on our very next ride ... or even our very next conditioning ride. A well-known and well-respected Southeast rider lost a great endurance horse when it shattered a leg on a routine conditioning ride. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxx http://www.rnbw.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
