I just wanted to give another perspective on this...  A rider/horse
team that normally does 50s may (for whatever reason) not have time to
condition for a 50 for a while.  Maybe they have only had time to
condition for a LD.  I just say this because I am in this situation
right now.  I am trying to determine whether I will ride the 30 or 60
at Talledega.  Should I not be allowed to do a LD if my horse and I
have been competing in 50s?
Also, there are factors that could cause the rider to want to do a LD
instead too. 
injuries, surgery, too much work, family issues, etc...
