He has been having very watery stools for the last few weeks. He had a similiar
problem last year when they switched his diet but it cleared up when they put
him back on his regular food. This time he seems to have a lot of gas (and
grumbly stomach sounds) and liquid diarrhea but other times his stool is more
formed
I had an older TWH gelding that had very watery diarrhea the last three to four weeks of his life, and I also couldn't get it to slow down. I tried kaopectic (misspelled), till we were both covered in the stuff.

I think your friend needs to have her Vet run a CBC on her horse to make sure nothing is going on inside. Do get his teeth floated and do run a fecal count to make sure he is not worm over loaded.

I would start feeding him small meals throughout the day, I'm guessing that he is still interested in food. Maybe grain him, really keep an eye on his weight, and water intake. When older horse get diarrhea, it's so easy for them to get dehydrated and before you know it you have another health problem on your hands.

Feeding him grain mixed with water is a good way to get fluids back into him. Has she contacted her Vet in regard to this matter? I wish her the best of luck getting this under control.

I had to euthanize my old boy on June 8, 2002,...not just because he had diarrhea for the last few weeks of his life. But because he finally gave up on life, and the last two days he would lie down and couldn't get back up. Banjo was 39 years old at his death and I still miss him dearly.
