Re: [RC] Rain Rot Again--Help Please - Susan GarlinghouseI thought someone else had mentioned some kind of supplement would help. Any ideas what this might have been? My feeling is that any kind of rain rot, dermatophytes, scratches, things like that are at least partially based on the immune system. So, aside from just making sure that the overall ration is a good one, you might want to add some fresh flax to the diet, along with some extra vitamin E (1000-2000 iu a day) and check to make sure both the selenium level is adequate (your vet can check that for you) and is getting some carotene from either green grass or carrots. If your ration's calcium-phosphorus balance won't be thrown off by it, you can also add a cup or two of a stabilized rice bran, preferably balanced with a calcium source. If you *really* want to go whole hog, you can also add a cup or two of whole raw, unsalted sunflower seeds. All of the above provide a nice source of fatty acids. It won't solve the problem if the issue is a bacterial, parasitic or fungal one, but will help get the hair back while your vet is working on other differentials. Good luck!
