[RC] gut sounds at vet-in - Jonni Jewell

If the ride is close, and with-in an hour or two, I give the horse a very
wet, sloppy beet pulp mash before loading and hauling. If the ride is
further, I give it to them in the trailer to eat on the way to the ride. The
wetter, the better. Good fiber in beet pulp, and lots for the stomach to
"chew on". Also helps hydration. As mentioned SO many times before, many
horses arrive at rides dehydrated, and never really rehydrate completely
before the ride starts. The wet beet pulp also helps that. Hauling 1300
miles to Utah for the Bryce XP, I gave the horses wet beet pulp mashes every
3-5 hours, along with the hay they had in front of them. I would mix in an
ice chest that had a tight closing lid, so it was soaked and ready to feed
at the next fuel and horse stop. Also, I feed carrots to help hydrate and
keep the guts going. A different icechest, drop in carrots, and a bag of
ice. Keeps carrots fresh and cold for days.

Use caution feeding carrots to some horses who gobble food, as they can
choke, though I have NEVER had one of mine do so, and do not try any new
food for the first time at a ride, or a day or so before. I start my beet
pulp well before the ride.....
