Re: [RC] Bare feet - oddfarmExcellent detailed description of the hoof, Kim. I shoe when I need to and go barefoot when I can. Recently, I rode my mare on a very rocky ride with no shoes. (wasn't expecting the rocks) I did a 30. The next weekend my daughter rode her on a very wet and muddy 25 CTR. The following weekend I went to ride her and she was very ouchy and gimpy on her front feet. Her feet had been worn from the rocks and peely from the wetness. My farrier came out with hoof testers and nothing showed up. (no soreness in the soles or frogs) She could walk better in deep sand, but not on hard ground. Put ground control shoes on and still very sore immediately afterward. But by day 2, no lameness. Just took her out on a 19 mile ride one week later and she is sound. I really think her hoof walls had taken all they could and were very sore. I imagined it felt like ripping off a finger nail to close to the bed. The finger tip isn't that sore, but hit the stumpy nail on something and you want to go through the roof. I like the idea of the rubber shoes. They must absorb more shock, as steel can't. My blacksmith says he has reset quite a few sets as they are pretty tough. At least here in flat, sandy, hot and humid, damn misquitos still alive, wet, Florida.
