Bandaging the tails is a GREAT idea!  I often have to hold the tail of a horse when Bruce shoes.  If that tail swish gets in his eye, it is very painful!
 
Some other helpful things you should do:
Always stand on the  far side of the horse when you farrier is shoeing the front, and stand on the same side as him/her when he is shoeing the back.  Keep your horse's attention and make sure he doesn't LEAN on the farrier!  YOU be the disciplinarian, not the farrier!  Practice at home; your farrier is NOT there to train your horse!
Realize that this is a backbreaking, often painful job, and if someone puts a shoe on your horse, whether it is at home or at a ride, you should do whatever it takes to show your appreciation.
