[RC] For Renee: hock injections - Kristi SchaafMy horse has bone spavin (arthritic hocks) in his tarsal/metatarsal joint. My vet injects him with Depo-Medrol (a corticosteroid) when he shows discomfort, not on a schedule. He usually shows the most discomfort as each spring approaches, and luckily one injection each spring has been enough to get him through a summer of pleasure riding. My vet told me that she won't inject a horse with Depo-Medrol more than 3 or 4 times a year because of the health risks of steroids. I don't think all vets are that conservative (but I agree with my vet's rule). And of course, I've never considered my horse 'sound' when he's moving well due to the injections, so I've never competed him in distance riding the years he's had them, even though I was told that 30 days after injection, he would no longer 'test' positive (here we are, back at THAT topic again!) Hope this helps, Kristi iluvdez at yahoo dot com ===== __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo!
