Re: [RC] : [RC] 100 Mile Mentors Club - Nancy MittsThese comments are all quite true! Monte & I have mentored people though hundreds (and 50's... and 25's) whenever possible (and will continue to so). There's nothing like "promising" to help somebody to guarantee getting pulled, though!<BG>Another good strategy is for several people who normally ride 50's and finish in the same time frame to move up together. Even if you don't stay in a pack for the entire ride, odds are you won't end up alone in that 80-100 mile zone, in the dark, which really freaks some people out. Riding alone in the dark can really solidify your bond with your horse. Fear of the dark is another "secret" reason some people won't do hundreds, though. Nancy Mitts .....the horses have to be fairly evenly matched.... From: rides2far@xxxxxxxx. One thing about a 100 that's different (for those considering one) is that everyone *really* wants everyone else to make it, because you *really* want as many people as possible out there to ride with after dark. It's one distance where people *will* wait on you before leaving a vet check because you don't want to be stuck out there alone. That said, I was mentored through my first 100 by Lynda Corry and if she hadn't I never would have realized how important it was to get as far as possible before dark. Forget 24 hrs...worry about what part of the trail you need behind you before dark. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus
