There's also an excellent case to be made
for never asking at all. Depending upon
your state's laws, the landowner may be
better off if you've never asked them
and forced them to say "Yes." If you
are legally a trespasser, they might have
much less legal exposure than if you
are there with their permission.
Each state varies. In Massachusetts, there
is a special law that says that a landowner
who has given permission for use of their
land for recreational purposes has no more
legal exposure than he/she would to a
trespasser.
Find out what your state's laws are.
