Re: [RC] Introducing the crupper - Sisu West RanchWe always use crupper's with all horses at all times. Here is what we do: 1. With saddle on put curpper on and adjust properly. Horse ideally is in round pen incase it spooks. Otherwise have the horse on longe line. Most horses will clamp their tail at this point. 2. Lead or lunge the horse. Some horses will buck. Just let them do it. 3. when the horse accepts the crupper with no bucking (could be session 2) jerk on it to let them feel it tighten. Do not worry if they clamp their tail. 4. Do a half mount. Jerk on crupper while doing the half mount. 5. Mount the horse and ride around at a walk. 6. While mounted jerk on the crupper. Jerk while moving. 7. You are ready for a hill. I have only ever had 2 horses buck when introduced. Both did adjust soon. Most horses clamp thier tail when the crupper is first applied. They relax after 10 or 15 min on trial. After 2 to 10 rides they stop reacting. It is really just the same as introducing any new piece of equipment. I don't like to start them with it loose as it is more of a shock when it tightens up. I even used a small bunge on a very reactive gelding the first few rides so it would always be somewhat tight.
