[RC] Introducing the crupper - Karen Casemier

Any advice on how to introduce a crupper to a very, um, marish mare?

I did my first "real" trail ride in my sportsaddle yesterday, and the only problem was that it slid forward on the very hilly terrain (this is not a problem with just this saddle - every single saddle does it on her). The saddle works great otherwise, so I think I'm going to have to use a crupper.

I've tried one once before, and even though I had it adjusted losely, Mazzie went around with her butt tucked and tail clenched the entire time. Is this something that she'll get used to and I just have to live with it until then, or are there any methods I can use to make the whole process easier? (FYI - longeing her in it isn't a great option. She's never been good on the longe line, and in general does much better under saddle).

The crupper I have is a cheap leather one. Will a nice biothane one really make a significant difference?

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks!

Karen and Mazzie (you want to put that WHERE?)
