[RC] "water toxicity" - terreI thought one of the vets would say this, but since they haven't (or I missed it), I think it is important to make this point very, very clear:The "water toxicity/hyponatremia" articles that have been quoted (ie about the ultra runner, etc) are NOT the same thing AT ALL as what allegedly happened to Darolyn's horse. The human runner (hyponatremia) was OVERhydrated from drinking too much water all day, and diluting out her electrolytes. Darolyn's horse was almost certainly UNDERhydrated as pretty much all hard-working horses are. The issue is the MANNER in which he was given the fluids he needed (tube vs IV). Given that he was apparently impacted, Darolyn's theory is that too much water was applied to the stomach where it couldn't be absorbed--not that he didn't need water! Please don't start worry about your horses drinking too much on the trail! There may be the odd occasion where a big drink of ice cold water causes some momentary discomfort, but it will pass as they keep working. After the ride is over, you might want to let them take some time to tank up, altho I have never seen this to be a big issue. But pls don't confuse the two totally different scenarios! terre =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
