Re: [RC] Horse Deaths - Maggie MieskeI respectfully disagree. Stats and records DO have their place in educating us when numbers are properly crunched. However, I do agree that we need to look at ALL possible criteria to actually learn anything ie. your examples of terrain, climate, travel time, etc. Ultimately, to one degree or another, we are responsible for what happens to our horses. If we are looking at the criteria that might be responsible to educate ourselves so that it never happens again, that's fine. But (and I am not saying that Darolyn does or did this!!!) too often, I see riders blaming their horse's pulls, lameness and metabolic, on EVERYTHING....the vet doesn't like my horse, the trail is too sandy/wet/rocky/hilly, etc., the trailer ride was too long/short, the HORSE didn't eat/drink well, the HORSE banged himself at home in the pasture or in the trailer or YOU NAME IT, there's someone willing to use it as an excuse. Seldom do we hear riders say that they weren't doing a good job that day riding or taking care of their horse...some even blame it on their pit crew! Don't make excuses. Find out why. And if it's something you could have done differently, then DO IT differently next time.
