Okay, so my herd has been vaccinated for the
RHINO is this EHV-1 in that catagory? What can we do to prevent our horses
getting this, especially when at an event and they are all drinking out of the
same tub?
Equine herpesvirus is also known as equine
rhinopneuminitis. Rhinopneuminitis chiefly affects the respiratory
system although it can also be seen in abortions, foal deaths and neurological
signs. Equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) is highly infectious and can
demonstrate any of the above signs. Equine herpesvirus 4 (EHV-4) is
usually linked just to respiratory disease but has occasionally been
associated with abortions. EHV-1 and EHV-4 infections are transferred by the
respiratory system through inhaling infected air or direct contact with
infected secretions, utensils or drinking water. A high percentage of adult
horses can carry both viruses in the dormant form and situations of stress
such as transportation, weaning or castration can cause occurrence of the
disease.
