Re: [RC] Question for SUSAN GARLINGHOUSE DVM! (Feeding a weanling) - Susan Garlinghouse, DVMHi. I just purchased a weanling Arabian colt. He will be coming home at the end of this month, and I am beginning the search for what to feed him. What else should I know about feeding a weanling? I don't want him to grow too fast and end up with joint/bone problems, nor do I want him to be Hiya Lindsey, I'm going to send in another post a reprise of the text from a discussion last March---you can go to the week of March 20, '03 to see the entire discussion on epiphysitis and such in young horses, but the post coming soon "The nutritional guide to lame babies" was and is most of what I recommend for feeding babies up to the age of about two (after which they can be fed pretty much as adults). I applaud your thoughts not to just buy another bucket of supplement---doing that instead of paying attention to basic nutrition usually creates more problems than it solves. Should I also supplement with a little alfalfa hay, or will the feed and bermuda be enough? Either way. Alfalfa is fine if you don't overdo it. I raised my kids without a shred of alfalfa and you'd be hard pressed to call them anything but built like a brick house.<g> Anyway, read the recommendations in the accompanying post and if you have any other questions, post 'em to ridecamp and we can all talk about it. :-) Susan G, DVM =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
