[RC] owyhee flash flood - Steph TeeterWell north-central Owyhee county has been re-arranged... but the ride WILL go on! It was a most amazing storm - inches of hail, gusting winds and an absolute deluge of rain. Gullies and dry washes became raging rivers. Highway 78 was closed while acres of soil and brush boiled across it headed for the Snake River. (I know this because I was stuck on the wrong side of the flood for almost an hour with my truck and horse trailer and two horses - helplessly watching - when we finally drove across the 'river' I felt it pushing the rig downstream as the muddy water boiled up onto the hood of the truck... heart thumping!). Our ranch sits above the confluence of 2 creeks - both were raging, one bridge is now useless, the other is still ok but will need a little work. The road into the ranch (marginal to begin with) is most interesting.... fortunately our neighbor has a dozer and loves to play with it. If you're coming to the ride, you'll be treated to some most amazing sights since I'm taking you across a few of the washes. I'm just glad this happened yesterday, instead of next Friday! The cottonwood trees have lost many of their leaves... and the blossoms stripped off all my flowers ... but, damn, that was exciting!
