[RC] Heat & humidity - rides2far

So, how do you folks in the Carolinas, GA, TX, and other hot and humid states
condition during the summer?

Slowly, morning & evening (I know the humidity is up in the morning but
there ought to be a "direct sunlight
index". Sponge, give electrolytes or let them eat some. Avoid letting
the core heat build up.

Are there very many summer rides in these humid states?

A few. They're pretty miserable. This weekend is Dawson Forest which is a good
example of a summer ride. They have good river crossings for thorough cooling.

Well, guess that means I shouldn't be riding now but that would only leave
me about 4 months in the whole year to ride

My biggest goal is to keep the core heat down. Walk up hills. If the
trail goes in and out of the sun trot the sun, walk the shade to prolong time
in shade. I think you can go too slow though and be out there too long. :-P If
the horse feels extremely hot to the touch...stay in the water for some time
and get that temp back down.
