[RC] Using breast collars compared to Helmets!!??? - q jessen

"I've never seen anyone
yet be MORE severely injured from wearing a helmet
than they would have been
without one."

I know a girl who use to ride for the flat work on
cutting horses for competition. She was on her way to
nationals on her horse that was great. They do a full
out run with a slide stop. The horse tripped on
accident, but at that speed, horse and rider went
over. The horse landed on the rider. She had no helmet
on. She was in a coma for 6 months. The Dr's told her
parents that she would be a vegetable. She proved the
dr's wrong, learned to walk (with a severe limp), talk
(cant remember things prior to the accident)again. She
is alive, handicapped, somewhat blind (has a seeing
eye dog/helper dog for her handicap) and still has
seizures from the accident. She can never ride any of
her horses again because a simple fall would kill her.
She was 13years old at the time, straight "A" student,
had her college picked out, full life ahead of her,
and because she WAS NOT WEARING A HELMET, she is now
23, single mom who has to live with her parents, who
are raising her and her baby, because she can't
remember to brush her own teeth. Ever since the
accident, her parents have made everyone who exercises
their horses wear a helmet. If they would have made
her do it all the time as a child, this might have
been just a bunch of bruises and maybe some broken
bones. My parents always made me wear a helmet. I do
admit, I hated it as a teen. "What if boys see me?".
But I, myself, have come off in some weird accident
situations where if I had no helmet, I don't know
where I would be right now. I am passing the same
knowledge onto my own children. When we go on any
rides, if we encounter anyone without a helmet my 10yr
and 6yr old daughters comment on how "careless people
are for their lives, and their friends and families
would be sad if anything happened to them just because
they didn't want helmet head". Thank you mom and dad
for making me wear a helmet!
