[RC] Shoes or No Shoes... - Darolyn Butler-DialHi all, No debate do I want to start either. but just passing on three of our horses just did 100 miles barefooted. 44 of the miles were on sandy & some fairly gravely (much to our dismay) roads. the balance of 56 miles was mainly forest trails with some short stints of gravel connecting roads. We had 14 horses in our group do the 50 barefooted. Yes, I still do shoe on occasion (with Equiflex polyurethanes) when I absolutely have to, but I can tell you that our horses hate it when we do, they get very sad & depressed expressions on their faces, sometimes they even have a light colic in response. They travel different, horses that don't forge or interfere barefoot are suddenly hitting and clicking and bloodying their bulbs. Do yourself a big favor & look over some of the "barefoot web pages, such as www.thehorseshoof.com www.thenakedhoof and draw your own conclusions about why barefoot is better, which is much more than most people would ever believe. And the best thing.. You can learn to do it yourself.. No more waiting on the farrier, & no one really knows your horse better than you do. and you will, once you start studying his feet in a consistent manner.
