Re: [RC] Using breast collars on flat trails... - Heidi Smith

Was the saddle horn dangerous? (I
personally don't like them) Some will argue yes and an
equal number will argue no...Was her bra dangerous???
guess it's best not to go there...lol

Another one of those "risk-benefit" questions.... If you don't rope,
where's the benefit? Cowboys who have died of ruptured spleens when horses
have fallen on them could attest to the risk if they were still alive....

I work with kids in therapeutic riding, and one of the things that we REALLY
make a BIG DEAL about is the combo of saddle horns and any loose clothing
that can catch on them. I had one gal whose jacket invariable caught on the
horn--and it was one of those that is almost form-fitting around the hips.
Being below freezing in the arena some days, I couldn't make her ride
without her jacket--fortunately, she was riding an Aussie stock saddle with
a horn, and we had one almost identical in the tack shed that didn't have a
horn, so the "fix" was pretty obvious... As a kid, I lost all the buttons
on a nice shirt one day, thanks to a saddle horn and leaning forward to be
balanced up a steep hill. Note that endurance saddles, even those that are
otherwise pretty much "western", don't have horns....
