Re: [RC] By-laws Ammendent - Maryanne Stroud Gabbani

As a non-resident alien former member of AERC, I would like to point out that if you are a serious foreign alien, like living in another country as I do, voting on anything for AERC isn't really practical. As I discovered to my intense disappointment, AERC doesn't send mail outside of the US and Canada. This meant that no one was going to send me a ballot for anything, not that I was desperate to vote, and even more important, I couldn't get Endurance News in Cairo. I think that the board is being very nice about clearing things up so that resident aliens (not the ones from Mars, Truman) do get to vote about things that are important to the endurance that they are riding. But in terms of some massive foreign groundswell taking over AERC??? I think that the practical aspects of mailing pretty much take care of it. By the time a ballot got from AERC to Cairo or any other alien stronghold, most of the board would have died.

I don't think this is a joke or funny. If we (the AERC) are going to insist that a person be a citizen or resident of the US to be a voting member, shouldn't we do the verification? Otherwise, go back to just letting people interested in the sport as it is in the US be Regular Members. If we're really concerned about non-citizens and non-residents swaying the vote and the direction of the AERC, shouldn't we be sure they're not just sending in bogus US addresses, collecting their ballots and voting?

It's the same as insisting that horses be 5 before doing an endurance
ride. If there is no check for the age of the horse, why have the
rule?

I think this rule about resident aliens is rather beside the point
until we decide whether or not to validate identity. Otherwise, you
resident aliens, just provide your address, pay your money and vote,
who's checking?

Oh, this is getting ridiculous..... Lets just look on the back of
an I-9 and see what is acceptable proof of documents to work in the
US and go by that while we are at it.
