Re: [RC] [RC] Limited Distance OOC? - Deanna GermanMaggie, Please go back to my post that originated this little series of ours and the example I gave. The person in that example wanted the win more than she wanted the finish. So be it. That's my point. *For me*, I want the finish more than I want the placing. (I'm so far away from top tenning it's ridiculous for me to talk about wanting a win.) Different goals, same sport. The same happens in CTR where people want that win so bad they won't risk overtime penalties so they will run a horse that isn't fit enough to make time, come up lame and then bitch that the ride was paced too fast, that they "had" to run their horse too hard. I just don't get that, but it is what it is. The beautiful thing about this sport is that you (generically *you*, not specifically you, Maggie) don't have to agree with me and what the heck does it matter what I think anyway. Lord knows, I've got too much to worry about with my own stuff than to go thinking too much about someone else's. I'll control the things I can and not be too worried about what I can't. Maggie, what I think is a failure for me and my horse (a non-completion) shouldn't change what you think about yourself and your horse. Early on I set a goal of "no-pulls" with this horse. I recognize that that's my own personal goal (and a lofty one) and doesn't have to be anyone else's. (It also happens to be what I admire in other riders.) I don't know why this ruffles your feathers so much. It seems to me that you think my opinion about what constitutes a failure is silly. I'm OK with that. So you got pulled recently. That doesn't mean I somehow feel superior to you. I don't need to push someone down in order to elevate myself. FWIW. I'll modify my stance on sh** happens: I think it happens a lot less than what some would like to believe. Now, back to the original topic, LD's in this area appear to me to be nothing but a 25 mile race for at least half of the participants. I don't know where some of the other posters live who say they aren't, but they need to come to the Great Lakes area and observe and then say what they think. I also don't consider getting pulled at the end of a ride because my horse found a root with his name on it 1/2 mile from the finish makes me a failure...in that case, shit did happen. When we do the best we can on any given day, even if we come up short, we cannot be that hard on ourselves... yes, major difference of opinion and there's room for it but this just doesn't ring right to me.
