That is true on the tobiano pattern, but the overo pattern is a recessive
gene. They can carry the gene and not have the pattern showing (like a
brown eyed person can have a baby with blue eyes when brown is dominate).
That is why many paint breeders (myself included) use QH mares as
broodmares. A crop-out paint is one that has two QH parents, two solid
parents. I will not bore the list with a huge email on color
genetics, but if anyone is interested feel free to email me. It is a
subject I love!
As I understand color, at least with pinto, that unless the
parent actually HAS color on its own body, it won't throw color. Meaning,
if you have a mare who had a parent that was pinto, but she came out solid,
and you bred to a solid stallion, you won't have a chance to get color, as
neither of them HAVE color. But again, I am no color expert. I am sure
there are some on the list who understand this more. (so if one of the
horses to be used in the breeding actually HAS rabicano color, then it
could throw rabicano??? I think....) Jonni

bay > roan rabicano...and he has sired > at least two...her dam
was a bay Tb with some white spots here and there and > she really
