Re: [RC] sports saddle - Sullivan

As a long time sport saddle rider, here are my two reccomendations

The creme de la creme is a Tammy sheepskin. She has created a pattern that
is custom fit to your
particular sport saddle. You give her certain measurements and she makes
one that covers the entire saddle
except the pommel (is fitted over the cantle), and goes down to top of
stirrup. They are thick merino sheepskins
and can be washed. They are both a work of art, and durable. Her email is
tammycs101@xxxxxxx

Then, Longriders Gear sells a sport saddle cover made by skito folks, it is
made out of the same fleece as the bottom
of a skito pad, doubled. It is extremely thick and comfy, but does tie
fairly crudely over the cantle, and I do not
like the seam down the center of the seat. That may end up bugging me over
time. However, It may be more washable in the long run, certainly easy to
wash if you get into a lot of poison oak! It also goes all the way down to
the top of the stirrup.

Tammy also makes just a seat cover, for those who don't want the full cover.

Steph, just a note, that it does make a huge difference with the SS if you
order it with the stirrups back at least
2", so you can stand balanced (not that you ride this way), but your feet
should be right under you. I feel this is
the most balanced saddle I have ever ridden in, when rigged this way.

The SS should be NOTHING like a standard Western saddle with it's
traditional chair seat.

Also - I'd like to know what fleece seat covers work best with a SS - the
one I have is great for saddles with fenders, but doesn't fit the SS at
all.

Mel - to answer your question, I have a SS and though I personally don't
like riding in it, I have a few horses that love it - and are hard to fit
to
other saddles. So it gets a fair amount of use. If you're used to western
style saddles it's probably not too bad, but its very hard for me to use
the
equitation training that I've had with the SS - it feels like sitting on a
soft couch, ok for pokey trail rides, but for anything at pace I feel more
like a passenger than a rider!
