Re: [RC] Garmin Geko 201 GPS Unit - April JohnsonI was quite disappointed with the Geko 201. We bought it and I tried it for a few training rides and then I had it with me at the Chicken Chase 25 in April. Its onboard calculations of distance traveled (and thus average speed) was way off. Like it said I'd gone only 19 miles at the end of the 25 miler. At first I thought it had lost satellites all that much, but when we downloaded the data to the computer, the computer calculated, off the track points, 24.6 miles or something very close to 25 miles. And there were only a couple of times where the Geko had lost satellites. And not very long. Maybe a total of 6 minutes in 3 hours 15 minutes. Decent satellite reception (I had it mounted to my arm kinda like the Timex watch receiver). Too bad, too. I love its size and the fact that it can hold 10,000 trackpoints (breadcrumbs), but if I can't look at it while riding and it tells me how far I've come and what our average speed is, I can't make informed decisions about how to continue riding. I'm back to using my trusty Garmin V with external antenna, but that's not an entry-level GPS unit. Another tip, though, if you're looking to download the trackpoints to your computer to play with the data (like me), you don't want the Timex GPS watch. Is there another reliable, yet simple to operate, model that you would recommend, instead. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
