RE: [RC] Saddle - best value & comfort? - Snodgrass, Bonnie

Just a note. I ride in a Sport Saddle, so do most of my endurance riding
neighbors. But I do know that some riders of gaited horses have had to
switch back to treed saddles as their horses had back problems with the
Sport Saddles. I'm sure that there are folks out there who have no problems
with the SS and their gaited horses but there is a potential for a problem.
I imagine it has to do with sitting in the seat for prolonged periods of
time while gaiting, rather than then standing or posting. Just a word to the
wise.

Why doesn't the horse's back get sore from sitting directly on the spine?
And from not having all the rider's weight spread out over a large surface
area?

I've never figured that one out. But even my wimpy,
anything-makes-her-back-sore mare does fine on 50's in the sport saddle.

It may have something to do with the way the stirrups are suspended. They
aren't attached like a bareback pad. They are designed to distribute weight.
Since we trot/canter more than walk, our weight is in the stirrups more than
the seat. Sound good?
