Re: [RC] [Guest] CMK - Heidi Smithlee noe lnoe@xxxxxxxxxxxxx What is CMK? CMK stands for Crabbet-Maynesboro-Kellogg, and is a breeding designation for a group of Arabian horses descended from horses bred by these foundation breeders and their sattelite breeders. These breeders tended to have a unity of purpose and a similarity of type that modern CMK breeders try to maintain--they bred classical Arabians of riding type, and for modern CMK breeders, breeding is more about traits and useability as it is about pedigree. In other words, we choose to breed these pedigrees because they represent and reproduce the kinds of horses we want to ride. Many of us became breeders precisely because we ARE riders, and because we could see the riding type slipping away in what was being bred for the modern show ring. We observed that these lines of horses reproduced the kinds of horses that we could ride. Many of us were CMK breeders long before we ever heard of CMK! :-) In other words, these horses separate themselves from the pack by their using conformation and abilities, even before you look at their pedigrees.
