[RC] pulse criteria and recoveries - June Scheunemann & Mike BernsdorfOh boy what a lot of opinions on this. I for one am wonerding why we are even messing around so much with pulse criteria. From the rides I have gone to I have not seen that lowering the pulse slowed riders down. Those that want to run out front continue to do so. I have seen where someone lost time in the vet check becaus ethe pulse was lowered and the riders push harder out on the trail to make up that time..uhm.... I also feel that we are limiting the horses that will continue to be ridden in this sport. There are horses out there that are not genetically perfect and that have a normal higher resting pusle...is there any proof that these horses are less at 50 and 100 mile rides??? WE had a mare that during a ride ..routinely pulsed at 64 and won 100 and 50 with no problem....she never had to be treated or anything so because she ran 64 was she not a good horse???? there are other breeds out there that run a higher pusle ...are we telling their owners not tor rid etheses horses??? I thought to finish was to win....what happened to that criteria...and if AERC believes in to finish is to win ...why are sooooo many points given to the 1st place horse in comparision to the rest of the finishers??? June in the hot muggy midwest p.s. surgery went well and I am on the road to recovery!!!
