Re: [RC] Conditioning miles - Heidi SmithI only have some 25's under my belt. I was wondering how many conditioning miles are needed to be competitive in 50's? I was averaging about 40 miles a week, but with the severe heat increases I have slowed down till I can rearrange my schedule and do more early morning rides. I am breaking these up into long slow rides, short fast rides, and hill sprints. JMHO, but get a broader base before you even THINK about being competitive. I don't even count my horse's conditioning miles--I think in the beginning, the main thing is to ride regularly, and not push too hard. There is a very important step between LD and competitive 50s--and that is SLOW 50s. I'm in that stage right now with the horse I'm on--with luck, I can do quite a few miles on him this year and get a good base, but if I Top Ten it will be because it was a short field and somebody got lost! Our current program?? 5-7 miles on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 10-12 miles on Saturdays that we don't have rides. We're already two 50s into the program, and he looked good at both, and IMO had an improved performance on the 2nd one. Go out and ride 50s at the middle of the pack for a year--and then come back and worry about fast rides and hill sprints.
