[RC] Kicking Horse and Dog Collar - Benedikte Whitman

I do some dog training and have used a shock collar on my own dogs but
never ever recommend it to anyone else. However, now that it has been
recommended, I would like to add a word of caution.

The reason that I never recommend them is that they require some expertise
to use appropriately. You need to be extremely attentive when you use
them, pick the moment that you are going to correct, and if you miss that
exact moment, hold off until next time.

This may sound a little obvious, but in practice, it is not quite as
straighforward as it sounds. When I first started using the collar, I
zapped my dog for not returning when called and I did it a smidge late and
it took her 6 months to get over it. She was afraid to leave my side at
all. After that, I decided in advance what the exact moment would be and
got it right or not at all and it worked great.
