[RC] re: Lost control - Michelle Fink"I'm afraid of hurting her mouth and of her falling if she's fighting me and not watching where she's going. She's very athletic and I trust her as long as she is paying attention." Hi Linda, How about using one set of reins for a mild curb and another for a sidepull or the like? I know it seems like a counter-intuitive combination, but it works pretty well for my ex-racer. When my mare is listening and responsive, the curb works great. It's a mild Myler short shank bit with a soft curb strap. If she gets upset and quits listening, she does better if I stay out of her mouth completely and use the sidepull to firmly pull her around. It's the opposite of how most people would use a curb, but it's working for us. I tried just an S-Hack on her, but when she's upset, it's still too much force and it upsets her more than the sidepull. I won't ride her in just a sidepull because if something reminds her of racetracks or being spanked by jockeys, she WILL try to buck me off and the leverage of a curb makes it easier for me to arrest that behavior. Aren't ex-racehorses fun??
